Egyptian Textile Industry Faces Risks

Problems like strikes of workers, closed factories, deficient raw materials and intense competition hinder the development of Egyptian textile industry. Egypt has been haunted by political issues since 2011.
As one of the pillar industries in Egypt, textile industry provides one-forth of non-agricultural labor jobs and and export volume of textiles account for 27% of non-petrochemical products. There are almost 400 factories that offering 300 thousand positions, including 70 thousand staff from state-owned enterprises and 230 thousand staff from private enterprises. According to the Egyptian Gazette, however, textile industry has suffered from serious damage since the beginning of coup.
Many enterprises lack of capital to purchase raw materials and pay wages. At the same time, due to outdated facilities and bad maintaining, only 30% state-owned textile enterprises can realize operation of the highest production capacity. The dated knitting machines also directly influence quality of products.
Many factories are closed while others have low production capacity, all these lead to deficiency of raw materials. Purchasers of Egyptian textile products said that garment products, especially dresses, evening gowns and military clothing were far from enough.
Egyptian cotton industry has a long history. It has enjoyed long-term reputation in the world. Being long, bright and flexible, Egyptian cotton has always been the first class raw materials to produce cotton knitting fabrics with superb quality. Nevertheless, long stapled cotton has been planted throughout the world. As the main products of Egyptian textile industry, long stapled cotton has lost its advantages on both price and quality.
