Design is prepared for producing woven fabrics. Design is done on paper. A complete for woven fabrics should consist of weave plan, drafting plan and lifting plan

1.Weave plan: Weave plan takes the interlacing of the ends and picks into consideration. It contains ups and downs of each yarn in fabric and the number of ends and picks of a design utilized. It is repeated for the complete design.

Properties and Ornamentation Techniques of Plain Weave

Compared with other types of woven fabrics, the structure of plain weave is the simplest. Most of the woven fabrics are made of plain weave and very tight fabric is also formed by plain weave. In plain weave, weft yarn passes through the warp alternatively.

Types of plain cloth:
Plain cloth made of plain weave is commonly seen in the market. Plain cloth is classified into:
1.Muslin
2.Linen
3.Alpaca
4.Taffeta
5.Calico
6.Long cloth

Properties of plain weave:
1.Both side of the weave are identical.
2.It improves the total output of woven fabric.
3.Plain weave is used as different kinds of textile raw materials and yarns, cotton, linen, jute, synthetic fibers, spun and continuous filament yarn, etc.
4.Thread interlacement is in alternative order.
5.The adjacent threads receive the maximum amount of support from each thread.
6.Structure of plain weave is stronger and better than any other structure.
7.Friction as well as stress on warp yarn is reduced by skip draft.

Ornamentation techniques of plain weave:
Various types of plain weave are commonly seen is the market. They have different outlook though they are made by the same design. The outlook of the plain fabric is changed by using ornamentation techniques.
1.Using extremely fine yarn, i.e. Muslim cloth.
2.Using coarse yarn, i.e. Jute Hessian.
3.Using threads of different colors which are combined in check form.
4.Using the threads on both warp and weft that may be varied in color and count.

The structure of plain fabric is quit simple. Various types of derivatives of plain fabrics are produced to meet the different requirements of customers. Modified plain fabric has a great demand in the market. Based on different design, the derivatives are classified.

Rib weave: Rib weave consists of ribs or cord in the warp or weft direction. Rib weave is classified into warp rib and weft rib.

Features of Divided Draft and Combined Draft

Drafting system consists of divided draft and combined draft. Neither divided draft and combined draft is sued as straight, skip, point, broken, grouped and curved draft.

Feature of divided draft:
1.Divided shaft is divided into two or more groups.
2.Each group needs a suitable type of draft.
3.Divided shafts is mainly used for divided weaves, double warp weaves, and two ply weavs, pile weaves and some others.

Features of combined draft:
1.The draft which combines two or more drafts for producing a certain type of fabric is known as combined draft.
2.Combined draft is a type of complicated drafts.
3.The draft is chosen for technological or economical reasons.
4.Designer should have great knowledge about the drafting plan.

What Are the Characteristics of Warp Rib?

The derivatives of plain weave are classified into warp rib and weft rib. Warp rib and weft rib can be classified into regular rib and irregular rib further. The structure of regular rib differs from the structure of irregular rib.

Characteristics of warp rib:
1.Warp rib can produce ribs or cords in the weft direction.
2.The quality of warp yarn is higher than weft yarn.

In the regular warp rib, the number of warp yarn is the same in each line while the number of warp yarn is not the same in the irregular warp rib. For that, the structure creates the floating characteristics on the fabric so that fabrics are more comfortable than the basic plain weave cloth.

Factors Affects the Prominence of Twill Weave

Diagonal lines on the face and back of the fabric are produced by twill weave. For that, the structure of twill weave has less comfort than plain weave. The prominence of the twill fabric is one of the important factors.

Characteristics of weave: Characteristics of weave have great influence on the prominence of the twill fabric. Twill lines having short float cause less prominence of twill line while having long float creates more prominence of twill line, weaker fabric, create looseness.

Characteristics of yarn: Prominence of twill weave has close relationship with type of yarns. Twill line having single yarn causes less prominence and having folded or ply yarn causes more prominence. Both same direction of twist and twill line and the finer and hard twisted yarn result to less prominence of twill weave. But opposite direction of twist and twill line and coarser and soft twisted yarn increase the prominence of twill weave.

Number of ends and picks per inch: Bothe EPI and PPI have great influence on the prominence of twill weave. The more EPI and PPI are the more prominence of twill weave is. Less EPI and PPI causes less prominence of woven structure.

The Methods Used for Indicating Drafting Plan

Drafting plan is a major part of a completer design for a woven fabric. Drafting plan indicates the number of healds shafts which are used to produce design.

Methods of indicating drafting plan: Ruling line, design paper and numbering are used to indicated drafting plan.

Ruling Line Method: Ruling line is method of indicating draft, in which the horizontal lines and vertical lines represent the healds and the warp threads respectively. The marks on the line indicate the healds upon which the respective threads are drawn. It is less used for indicating drafting plan.

Design paper: Design paper in one of the most suitable ways to express drafting plan for a woven fabric. The horizontal spaces represent the healds while the vertical spaces represent warp threads. Marks can also be inserted upon the small squires.

Numbering: Numbering refers to the quantity of threads. The threads are successively drawn on the held to indicate number.

Features of Mock Leno Weave and Huckaback Weave

Mock leno weave and huckaback weave are two important types of fancy weave which are used as raw materials for towel. Both two weaves have rough structure.

Feature of Mock leno weave:
1.The fabric has rough surface because it is like net or perforated.
2.Normally repeat size even number. The smallest repeat size is 6×6.
3.The weave can be used as towel for its excellent hydroscopicity.

Features of huckaback weave:
1. The fabric has rough surface.
2. Normally repeat size odd number, then better structure formed.
3. It can be used as towel for its excellent hydroscopicity.

The fancy design is different from the basic weave and this type of weave is performed for special purpose.

Features of Straight Draft and Skip Draft

Straight draft and skip draft are the most commonly used drafting system to express drafting plan of woven structure.

Features of straight draft:
1.Straight draft is the simplest type of draft forming basis from many other drafts.
2.Straight draft is mainly used with any number of held shafts.
3.Every successive thread is drawn on each successive shaft. The first thread on the first shaft, the second on the second shaft. The last thread of the warp repeat is drawn in the last shaft.
4.The number of held shafts is equal to the number of warp in the repeat.

Features of skip draft:
1.Skip draft is used for weaving the fabric having high density of warp threads and the same structure.
2.2, 4 or 6 held shafts are used for drafting system.
3.It is able to decrease the density of held on each shaft and reduce the friction of threads against thread and thread against held.
4.Skip draft is used in plain weave.
